Oswald Cuthbert Cartmell was born in 1897 whilst the family lived in Egglescliffe Village. His father Robert was a miller aged 36, mother Mary was 35. sister Winifred was 5, brother Rogert Heskith was 3 and Percy W was 1. Sisters Silvia May was born in 1899, Constance Mary in 1903 and Rosine in 1904. By 1911 the whole family were living in Yarm High Street in a 10 room house. He signed up on 8 April 1914 aged 17 years and 3 months. At the time he was a fellmonger working for Mr Hird on the High Street in Yarm. A fellmonger prepares skins for the tanner. He lived at Brewery House, Union Yard in Yarm. He enlisted into the 1/4th Yorkshire Regiment on 9th Seotember 1915 and was posted to France on 10th March 1916. On 20th April he was found sleeping whilst on duty as a sentinel and sentenced to 2 months Field Punishment number 2 when he was placed in fetters and handcuffs. He received three gun shot wounds. His back on 10th January 1918, to his leg on 1st June 1918 both described as mild and to his hand on 10th October 1918. He survived the war without any further misdemenors until 27th December 1918 when he was fined 6 days pay and a further 9 days pay on 22nd January 1919 for going absent without leave. He was demobed on 5th April 1919 with injuries described in his medical report as mild.

On return to Yarm, Oswald married Mary J Scott in 1920 and set up a cycle shop in the High Street. Their son Keith photographed below established the more familiar electrical business in 1948 after serving in ww2 and becoming a qualified electrician.
Oswald died in 1967 aged 72. His grandson Paul now runs the shop in the High Street
